Beyond The Box (2026) Official Film Trailer
Directed by Andy Ryan
I didn't want to make another inspirational disability documentary. We've all seen them… The music swells, challenges are overcome, everyone learns a valuable lesson about the human spirit. That's not what Beyond The Box is about.
After 10+ years working as a cinematographer and teaching filmmaking skills to disabled individuals, I saw a pattern emerge. I saw talented people cycling through training programs that promised careers but delivered certificates of completion. When the workshops ended, the industry didn't answer the phone. That experience is why this film exists. Outside observers may have seen impressive publicity, but as a collaborator who'd been in the room long enough to understand what was broken, I wanted to tell the real story.
Beyond The Box emerged through a partnership with Yes I Can Unity Through Music & Education, a nonprofit actually placing disabled creatives in entertainment careers. The goal was to document what real inclusion looks like: messy, complicated, enlightening, and often leading to success.
Six of the film's seven subjects became crew: camera operators, production sound mixers, a key grip, photographers, and a composer. This wasn't about optics. It was employment. A cinematographer who'd been creatively isolated for years returned to professional work through this production. A composer scored the film using a live coding environment, recording stems alongside viola and VST instruments. A grip with cerebral palsy, known for arriving first to every set with a Honda Accord full of gear, served as camera operator and key grip. The film's structure mirrors its message: if you're going to argue for authentic inclusion, your production has to practice it.
What we captured is documentation of seven artists navigating industries not built for them, finding success on their own terms, and quietly reshaping the creative world around them. That's the real story.
