Beyond The Box (2026) Official Film Trailer
Directed by Andy Ryan
I didn't want to make another inspirational disability documentary. We've all seen them—the music swells, challenges are overcome, everyone learns a valuable lesson about the human spirit. That's not what Beyond The Box is about.
This film emerged from collaboration with Yes I Can Unity Through Music & Education, a nonprofit actually placing disabled creatives in entertainment careers, not just cycling them through training programs. I wanted to document what real inclusion looks like—messy, complicated, sometimes failing, often succeeding, always honest.
Seven subjects became collaborators. Abel, a neurodivergent cinematographer, joined our camera crew. Matt and Mike shot behind-the-scenes while interning as photographers and camera operators. Will recorded our production sound while expanding his voice acting career. Quargs composed the music. This wasn't just about telling their stories—it was about sharing creative control, making the film's structure mirror its message about authentic inclusion.
The visual language emerged from these relationships. Quargs’ ski mask removal wasn't scripted. It was their idea for expressing authenticity. Mike’s mountain top drumming happened because we trusted his artistic instincts. Brandon’s explanations of "palsy-proofing" film sets taught us how innovation happens when you listen to disabled expertise.
What we captured isn't inspiration. It's documentation of artists navigating industries not built for them, finding success on their own terms, supporting each other through isolation and discrimination, and quietly reshaping creative worlds around them. That's the real story. That's what matters.
